Del Potro wins Citi Open tennis

Juan Martin Del Potro has won the Citi Open tennis tournament by defeating the local boy John Isner. Del Potro won the match in three sets by 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

This is the third time that Del Potro has won this tournament. He had done that before in 2008 and 2009. Overall, this is the 15th WTA title won by Del Potro in his career.

Isner had been in great form off late. He had recently won the BB&T Atlanta Open and had looked good in this tournament as well. So, he was expected to give Del Potro a tough fight. He looked like doing so at the start as he grabbed the opening set in less than half an hour to put the Argentinean star under pressure. But, from the second set onwards, Isner’s performance deteriorated considerably and he ended up losing the contest.

This was the 4th match between these two players and Del Potro has won all of them, making him the favourite on the sports betting markets.

In the post match interview, Del Potro said, “It’s wonderful to lift the trophy again here. I had got a bit frustrated at the start as nothing was going my way. He was serving beautifully and I was having a lot of problems. But, in the second set, I had a quick breakthrough and that got me going.”

“In the third set, I felt I was at my best. I played some fantastic forehand shots and I was good from the baseline too.”

On the other hand, Isner was not looking in a happy mood at all in the post match interview. The American player said, “Juan was fantastic in the last two sets. He just took the match away from me. Obviously, it doesn’t feel good. It would have been nice to win two titles in a row.  But, that’s the way it goes.  Everyday isn’t going to be yours.”
